New kitchen cabinets are one of the biggest line items in any remodel, and installation means living without a functioning kitchen for weeks. Refinishing the cabinets you already have costs a fraction of that and is usually done in a matter of days. But we'd rather tell you honestly when it's the right call and when it isn't.
Paint them if the boxes are solid. If your cabinet frames and doors are structurally sound — real wood, MDF, or good plywood with no swelling, no delamination, and doors that still hang square — refinishing will give you a genuinely new-looking kitchen. Dated oak, honey maple, and dark cherry all take paint beautifully.
Replace them if the structure has failed. Water damage under the sink that has swollen the particleboard, shelves that sag, or doors that no longer close right are problems paint cannot fix. Layout changes fall in the same category — if you want a different configuration, painting the old one is money spent twice.
What separates a good cabinet job from a bad one is entirely in the prep. Kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking grease, and paint will not bond to it. We remove and label every door and drawer front, degrease thoroughly, sand the surfaces, and apply a bonding primer before any color goes on. Skipping any of those steps is why some painted cabinets start peeling at the handles within a year.
The finish coat matters just as much. We spray a cabinet-grade enamel rather than brushing it, which is what gives you that smooth factory look with no brush strokes, and it cures to a hard surface that stands up to daily opening, closing, and wiping.
